It’s where people, Black and otherwise, come to make to make their big dreams come true. Everyone is taking a step towards their “somewhere”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Many of these stories were new to me. While I knew that they were places of cultural significance, I didn’t know why. Even looking at the original album cover I noticed it was shot from the same perspective in which I shot and painted my figures; I hadn’t consulted the cover before creating the design concept. Price's 24th @centralavenuejazz⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I had considered the threads of culture weaving their way from cities and towns in the South out through the Great Migration and into the cities of the North and West that would become cultural hubs for Black Americans, but I had not expected to find myself interwoven into this story. What were your ideas? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I wanted to focus on the idea of independence. When you travel, you are a lone traveler; people are usually on their own trip. In the portrait, my wife Misha is a traveler on her own journey on the Blue Line and appears to be either daydreaming or enjoying the scenery. I want people see themselves in and connect with my portrait. When I pick my subject, I like to choose someone close to me. The portrait is a digital collage with over 250 layers of different images and colors. If I could do this project over again, I would have added sun rays going through the train and buildings in the background, creating a transcendental moment. I try to focus on it but not in obvious ways, like a big eyeball in the center of someone’s forehead; I try to find symbols that more clearly reflect the reality of our experiences living with the third eye. I discovered replacing the solid colors with images of various organic textures and painted surfaces resembled a hand brushed art technique, from a distance while a collage up close.
